Virat Kohli’s Chinnaswamy Return Delayed as Vijay Hazare Trophy Matches Shift Venue

Cricket fans in Bengaluru will have to wait a little longer to watch Virat Kohli play at his beloved M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Kohli’s much-awaited return to his home ground has been delayed after Bengaluru city police did not grant permission for seven Vijay Hazare Trophy Group D matches to be played at the venue.

The decision comes amid continued concerns over crowd control and public safety following the tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebrations earlier this year, in which 11 people lost their lives. Since that incident, authorities have adopted a much more cautious approach toward large gatherings around the stadium.

Why Virat Kohli’s Chinnaswamy Return Was Delayed

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had earlier changed the schedule and decided to move two Delhi matches to the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Delhi were scheduled to face Andhra on December 24 and Gujarat on December 26. Both matches attracted considerable attention because Virat Kohli was expected to feature for Delhi, giving Bengaluru supporters an opportunity to see the former India captain in action at his home venue.

However, the plan changed after a high-level committee inspected the stadium on Monday.

The committee included officials from the city police, public works department, fire and emergency services and health departments. Its findings were subsequently submitted to Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) commissioner Maheshwar Rao, who is overseeing the review process.

Safety Concerns Remain a Major Issue

The inspection was carried out as part of efforts to implement recommendations made by the Justice Michael Cunha Commission following the June 4 incident.

The commission had suggested 17 measures aimed at improving safety and crowd management.

Although discussions between the authorities and KSCA officials were continuing, the cricket association began preparing an alternative venue in case permission for Chinnaswamy Stadium was not granted.

The decision ultimately meant that the planned matches had to be moved away from the city-centre stadium.

Vijay Hazare Trophy Matches Shifted to BCCI Centre of Excellence

The seven matches that were scheduled to be played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium have now been shifted to the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

The move was made quickly because there were no other matches scheduled at the facility. Teams were informed about the change and began making the necessary arrangements for the new venue.

The decision reflects the authorities’ priority of avoiding another major crowd-related incident.

KSCA also acknowledged the decision and said it respected the recommendations of the review committee. The association also thanked the Karnataka government for considering its request.

Matches to Be Played Behind Closed Doors

One of the biggest disappointments for cricket fans is that the matches at the Centre of Excellence will be played behind closed doors.

The facility does not currently have arrangements to accommodate spectators, meaning Bengaluru supporters will not be able to watch Kohli’s return in person.

For many fans, the opportunity to see Kohli back at Chinnaswamy was expected to be a special occasion. However, safety concerns have taken priority over the planned homecoming.

Virat Kohli Joins Delhi Squad for Practice

Despite the venue change, Virat Kohli has already started preparing with the Delhi team.

Kohli and Rishabh Pant joined the Delhi squad for a net session on Tuesday. They spent around an hour training alongside teammates, including Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini.

Kohli was seen spending significant time in the batting nets and working on his shots. He also interacted with his teammates during the practice session.

The training session also marked Kohli’s first visit to the revamped BCCI Centre of Excellence.

The facility was previously located within the Chinnaswamy Stadium complex before being shifted to its current larger campus. It has since become an important centre for India’s fitness, rehabilitation and high-performance programs.

Vijay Hazare Trophy Important for Kohli Ahead of New Zealand ODIs

The Vijay Hazare Trophy comes at an important stage of Virat Kohli’s career.

With India scheduled to play a large number of ODIs before the 2027 World Cup, domestic matches are important opportunities for players to get competitive game time.

For Kohli, the Vijay Hazare Trophy also provides valuable preparation ahead of India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which is scheduled to begin on January 11.

The veteran batter enters the tournament with plenty of confidence after an impressive home series against South Africa.

Kohli scored 302 runs in three matches, including two centuries, showing that he remains in excellent touch with the bat.

Kohli’s Form Keeps Fans Excited

Kohli’s recent performances have once again increased expectations among Indian cricket fans.

His ability to score consistently in the ODI format remains one of his biggest strengths, and the upcoming domestic matches could provide him with further match practice before the New Zealand series.

Although fans in Bengaluru will not get the chance to watch him at Chinnaswamy this time, his presence in the Delhi squad has already created considerable interest around the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Bengaluru Fans Will Have to Wait for Kohli’s Homecoming

The postponement of Virat Kohli’s return to M Chinnaswamy Stadium is certainly disappointing for Bengaluru cricket supporters.

However, the decision has been taken in the context of public safety and the concerns surrounding large gatherings at the venue. Authorities are clearly determined to ensure that adequate safety arrangements are in place before allowing major crowds back into the stadium.

For now, Kohli’s focus will remain on training and preparing with Delhi at the Centre of Excellence.

His much-anticipated return to Chinnaswamy may have been delayed, but Bengaluru fans will still be hoping that the wait is eventually rewarded with another memorable Kohli innings in front of a packed home crowd.
